Optics & Photonics Taiwan International Conference (OPTIC) is the annual meeting

for the photonic community in Taiwan. It is also one of the most important

International photonics forum in Taiwan this year. The conference is held from

December 3 to December 5, 2020 by National Taipei Unversity of Technology in

Taipei, Taiwan. Ten topics of photonics will be covered in this conference:

    1. Nanophotonic Materials and Devices

    2. Optical Waveguides and Communications

    3. Quantum Electronics and Laser Technology

    4. Holography and Information Processing

    5. Optical Design

    6. Biophotonics and Biomedical Imaging

    7. Display Technology

    8. Solid State Lighting

    9. Photovoltaic Technology

    10. Thin‐Film Technology and Optical Engineering

This year is especially important because of the earlier pandemic situation

globally. Conference planners and staffs took extra cares to prepare this technical

event. A broad spectrum of invited speakers were planned and foreign speakers

delivered their talks using either pre‐taped video or live‐streaming. Other local talks

were presented in the National Taipei University of Technology with mask mandate

and temperature measurement for each participant. Social distance is also required.

In this conference, the plenary talks were delivered by President of IEEE Photonics

Society, Dr. Carmen S. Menoni, President of SPIE, Dr. John Greivenkamp, Vice

President of OSA, Dr. Satoshi Kawata. Plenary talks also covered a wide range of

topics, from Prof. Milton Feng’s microcavity laser, Prof. Jianping Yao’s integrated

Microwave Photonics, Prof. Gee‐Kung Chang’s 6G Wireless Networks, AUO President

Frank Ko’s Digital transformation in Display industry, Prof. Ding‐Ping Tsai’s Meta‐lens

research, Prof. Ann‐Shyn Chiang’s Brain Imaging technology.

The attendance is also impressive: more than 1000 students, engineers, and faculty

members registering this conference. Among them, around 100 IEEE members

participated this conference in the form of presentation, committee members,

organizing committee and exhibitions. The interaction between academia and

industry is one of the important things to keep the photonic development going and

the novel ideas can prevail. We really hope we can achieve this goal by this annual

    gathering.

In the conference, a special event Women in Optics/Women in Engineering was

held to celebrate and promote the female participation of the photonic research

activities. The event is well planned, and accompanied with a family event to make

photonic toys for kids, and some wine tasting. It really helps moms and dads in

photonic community to share their experiences and educate the young minds.

In conclusion, this technical conference was held during this difficult time, and the

high attendance demonstrated that the need to have a platform for knowledge

discussion is important. Students and professors appreciated the opportunities to

discuss their works with other people. In the following, we will share some of the
